The definition of COURAGE-->
1.The ability to do something that frightens one. & 2.Strength in the face of pain or grief.
Did you ever feel that you lacked courage? Did you ever have one of those days when you realized that you were most certainly not cut out for ____ (& you fill in the blank...whether it's parenting, married life, friendships, my current job, whatever challenge you are currently facing)
I have been homeschooling now for just over 5 weeks. Even though I have been parenting for, oh well, just over 12 years, it appears to me that I have a new healthy respect for Mothers who willingly have chosen to stay home full-time with their kids....
How each one comes to choose the path of homeschooling, or any challenging situation for that matter, is of course a very personal journey. However, that being said, every homeschooling mom (or parent in general) that I've ever become acquainted with at SOME POINT in their journey alongside their children has said something along the lines of "I just wanted to walk away today & never look back!" "It was just one of those days, you know!" "I called ____ & offered them the kids today, man were they acting up!" "I'm ready to throw in the towel" ...and many worse exaggerations I assure you.
Today was one of those really challenging days for me with the kids. It started off simple. Kids were ready to begin school & to enjoy a fun day of learning at home! However...however...I suppose I had woken up on the wrong side of the bed...and downhill it went from there!!!
Recently, I joined a support group for homeschooling parents in our area. We are currently meeting once a week for a running club til the end of October. Today was the day for that said club meeting...so I wavered back and forth, back and forth, on whether we should go today. I wasn't sure it would be a good idea to drive after the SECOND time my voice 'began to get louder' with the kids!
Finally, I relented and we all piled into the van for the 1/2 hour drive. The whole way we played the 'quiet game' so Mommy's head could stop hurting (yep, one of THOSE days). When we arrived the kids practically jumped over their van seats and hurried over to their friends. I sauntered up to some moms and we began some chitter chatter about our Thanksgiving weekends, that had just passed.
After about an hour we sat around a table while all the children played....I asked one of the 'older' more experienced Moms how she had found her homeschooling journey. It led into a short, but meaningful, discussion about 'those days EVERY parent has'.... We laughed together and I instantly felt my shoulders relaxing...
Truly, parenting our children (and a double whammy for homeschoolers!) is NOT for the faint of heart...TAKE COURAGE!!! You are not alone.
