Coconut oil has had such a bad rap for so long!
Yes, it's a saturated fat.
Yes, it's pure fat.
BUT...
more important than anything else,
is that researchers, & now the mainstream health communities, are recognizing how HEALTHY coconut oil actually is.

Today, I wanted to share TEN AWESOME ways to incorporate this amazing food into your day!!!

  • Substitute coconut oil into all of your recipes requiring butter, shortening or margarine. Butter, in limited amounts, has some nutrients found in it. However, shortening & margarine are often hydrogenated (or think modified!) vegetable oils, & therefore should not consumed at all. Coconut oil is a very stable fat, and can tolerate high heat, so feel free to enjoy it in all of your baking as well!

  • Coconut oil is perfect for pan frying and sautes. I use it all the time and quite enjoy the way it causes the food to taste so rich. If you want to avoid the coconut taste use regular coconut oil (it will just taste like plain shortening with no real taste). Only the extra virgin will have the coconut-ty flavor still attached to it.

  • Dry hands? Eczema or dermatitis? This is a perfect oil/cream to rub on all those dry spots. Try it regularly for a week & see if it makes a difference. For extra 'anti-itch', then melt some down first PLUS add a few drops of lavender oil. I have used it on young children as well with great success!

  • Dry hair? Dry scalp? You don't need much on your head to make a difference. A few drops dispersed through the hands, and then rubbed where appropriate (for me, it's the dead ends that get me!) can make such a difference.

  • Instead of buying an expensive moisturizer, how about trying some coconut oil? I'm not joking here. I use this daily after I wash my face, and although my skin isn't perfect, have received numerous compliments asking what I use on my face. It's simple...coconut oil!

  • This one is simply anecdotal as I have not heard of this before, but I'll share. I have a virus living in my lips since a shared childhood drink brought me to the fate of those dreaded cold sores (that lie dormant until I'm stressed to the max!). I used to buy different creams, and rubs, take extra vitamin C, etc. Recently I tried rubbing coconut oil on them (while carefully washing my hands after touching the open sores) and did this about twice per day. The pain was lessened, and the sores seemed to heal much faster! Again, this is just my own experience, but can't hurt to try with this one. Those sores are so annoying!

  • Do you make smoothies? Smoothies are a regular occurrence around here, and I'm always looking to 'hide' things in them for my unsuspecting family. Especially healthy ingredients. I find coconut oil (or milk, or the cream) make the smoothie extremely filling, and tasty (if using the extra-virgin that is). Just make sure to consume after blending, as the oil can harden next to frozen fruit & turn into chunks.

  • Dry soles of your feet? Try soaking in the bath (preferably while adding some nice magnesium salts!) and then afterward, add a whole bunch of coconut oil & rub throughout dry patches. Try it regularly & see how your feet fare!

  • Heard of oil pulling? It seems to be the latest rage, and although I can honestly say I have only attempted once or twice (I detox with herbs myself, & gag with oil swishing around in my mouth) many others have reported that oil pulling has been successful for them. Here' s a link with more details: Oil Pulling with Dr. Mercola

  • Lastly, I have taken the oil internally as a supplement of sorts, to support many systems in the body. Taking one teaspoon a day, is thought to be helpful for your skin, hair, digestion and overall health. Fat is needed in the body for it to function optimally, and should not be avoided altogether. Finding the right fats, therefore is crucial. I believe that coconut oil is one of the fats to include in your diet, in moderation of course.

  2. Thanks for introducing me to coconut oil. Love it for cooking. Do you need to use organic?
A friend also told me she uses it as a sunscreen for her little ones. I haven't tried it, have you heard if this?

    1. I don't think it would matter that much since it doesn't have thin outside skin (organic vs. non). I have used it as sunscreen but heard of it. Here's a link I found: http://www.collective-evolution.com/2014/04/18/avoid-the-toxic-sunscreen-try-coconut-oil-instead/
I use it for SO many other uses though!! Thanks Anne for dropping by the blog :)

  8. Good to know...been hearing lots of buzz about coconut oil, but wondering how to use it. My daughter is taking the supplements, but too soon to see any benefits. She's always trying to boost immunity since finding out she's gluten-intolerant. (along with half my family!) Thanks for the info!

  14. I love coconut oil too! We use it on our skin (only thing that cleared up my psoriasis I got when pregnant with my daughter) and for cooking too! I have tried oil pulling once (and was surprised when didn't gag on it as I have very sensitive gag reflex!). I want to continue with the oil pulling since having various issues with my teeth and have heard it can help greatly!
